Your engineers are capable people. Surely they can pick vision up as they go. The uncomfortable truth is that they will pick it up either way. The only question is whether you pay for that learning in a training course or in project delays. The second option costs far more.

Self-learning versus formal training, fairly compared

It is worth being fair to self-teaching, since it is not always the wrong choice. If you already have an experienced vision engineer who needs to top up on one specific topic, working it out from documentation and their own experience can be perfectly sensible. Formal training is not the answer to every gap. Where self-teaching falls down is when you are trying to build real capability from a low base. Then the slow, expensive trial-and-error is not a top-up. It is the whole learning curve, playing out on your projects and your timeline.

This is where training stops being a cost and becomes an investment. It is the argument that matters most. The single biggest return on training a vision engineer is the integration time you save. A well-trained engineer builds a system faster, with fewer wrong turns. They get it working reliably sooner than one who is learning as they go.

Think about where a vision project actually loses time. It is rarely the assembly. It is the false starts, the wrong lens ordered and returned, the lighting reworked three times, the days spent chasing a software fix for what was really an imaging problem, the system that passes in the lab and fails on the line because something was not understood. Every one of those delays costs engineering time. Often it holds up a production line or a customer delivery. That costs far more than the engineering. A trained engineer avoids most of them, having seen the mistakes before and knowing how to sidestep them.

Put a rough number on it. If training saves an engineer even a week or two of floundering on a single project, the value of that time alone typically exceeds the cost of the course. It easily can.
