Clearview supplies cameras from four manufacturers. Teledyne Vision Solutions, LUCID Vision Labs, CIS and Zebra. We are distributors for all four, so we have no commercial incentive to recommend one over another. What we do have is years of experience deploying these ranges across a wide variety of applications, which gives us a genuine view on where each one excels.

This is not a ranking. Each manufacturer serves a different part of the market, and the right choice depends entirely on your application. The purpose of this article is to help you self-select the range that fits your needs, so you spend your evaluation time on the right products rather than working through every option.

Teledyne Vision Solutions

Teledyne Vision Solutions brings together several of the most established names in machine vision under a single brand. DALSA, Coreco, e2v, Adimec and Point Grey have all come together, and because Teledyne manufactures its own image sensors, it is one of the most complete and vertically integrated companies in the industry. The combined product portfolio is the broadest available, covering area scan, line scan, 3D, board-level, contact image sensors and frame grabbers.

For customers evaluating Teledyne, the key thing to understand is that the product families have distinct identities and heritage, even though they sit under one brand. Knowing which product family to start with saves time.

Area scan cameras

Blackfly S: one of the most widely deployed models in the range. Available in GigE and USB3, covering resolutions from VGA to 24 megapixels with a huge selection of Sony sensors. Compact, reliable, competitively priced. The default recommendation for a wide range of standard area scan applications.

Forge: the performance step-up. Available in 5GigE and 1GigE variants, including an IP67 model for harsh environments. The 5GigE Forge delivers higher bandwidth without a frame grabber, with advanced firmware features including burst mode for very high-speed capture. The Forge 1GigE IP67 brings Teledyne into the washdown-rated camera market.

Genie: an established area scan range, available in GigE, 10GigE and CoaXPress. Proven in demanding industrial applications with a strong track record in OEM programmes.

Firefly: ultra-compact, low-cost cameras for OEM and embedded applications where size and price are the primary drivers.

Dragonfly and BFS board-level cameras: board-level designs for OEM integration into custom products. The broadest board-level range among the three manufacturers, serving embedded vision, medical devices, and compact OEM systems where the camera must fit inside the product.

Line scan cameras

Tetra: the new entry point for line scan. 2K to 8K resolution with 2.5GigE interface, featuring Super Resolution and HDR. Brings line scan to price points previously only achievable with area scan. Available in mono, colour, and multispectral (RGB + NIR). See the Tetra line scan range

Linea: the mid-range line scan family. GigE and Camera Link interfaces. Proven in print, packaging, and web inspection with wide industry adoption.

Linea HS and Linea ML: the high-performance line scan families. Camera Link HS interface for maximum bandwidth, with resolutions up to 16K and beyond. Used in the most demanding print inspection, PCB inspection, and wide-web applications.

3D cameras

BumbleBee: stereo vision cameras for 3D depth sensing. Used in robot guidance, autonomous navigation, and applications requiring real-time 3D point clouds from a passive stereo approach.

Z-Trak: laser triangulation 3D profilers for in-line surface inspection and dimensional measurement. Laser triangulation delivers the highest depth resolution of any 3D technology, making the Z-Trak range the right choice for precision surface profiling, gap and flush measurement, and quality inspection where micrometre-level accuracy is required.

Frame grabbers and contact image sensors

Xtium frame grabbers: Teledyne manufactures its own frame grabber cards for Camera Link, Camera Link HS, CoaXpress and GigE Vision, ensuring tight integration between camera and frame grabber. When both the camera and the frame grabber come from the same manufacturer, the data path from sensor to host memory is designed and tested as a complete system.

AxCIS: a fully integrated close-range line scan imaging module combining sensor, lighting, and optics in one unit. This is a Contact Image Sensor product for contact-distance scanning applications. Note: this is unrelated to CIS Corporation, despite the similar name.

Strengths

Breadth. No other manufacturer covers as many camera types, interfaces, and application segments under one brand. Whatever your application, Teledyne almost certainly has a product family that fits. The supply chain is mature, product lifecycle management is well-established, and for OEM customers buying in volume, the supply continuity programme provides long-term confidence.

Line scan depth is unmatched. From the entry-level Tetra to the high-performance Linea HS and Linea ML families, nobody offers more line scan options across more resolutions, interfaces, and sensor configurations.

Teledyne's SDKs are well-documented and widely used. All cameras are GeniCam-compliant, so they work with every major third-party software platform including Zebra Aurora and HALCON.

Limitations

The breadth of the range can be overwhelming. With multiple area scan families (Blackfly S, Forge, Genie, Firefly), each with different heritage and positioning, it can be harder to identify the right starting point compared to LUCID's simpler, more unified product structure.

While Teledyne now offers an IP67 camera (the Forge 1GigE IP67), their IP67 range is narrower than LUCID's, where IP67 is the standard across most camera families rather than a single model option.

The range

LUCID builds exclusively on GigE Vision, covering 1G (Phoenix, Triton), 2.5G (Triton2), 5G (Atlas), 10G (Atlas10, Triton10), and 25G (Atlas25). The Helios2 is a GigE-based time-of-flight 3D camera. Advanced sensing options include polarization, SWIR, UV, event-based vision, and HDR across multiple camera families. Line scan models are available in the Triton2 range.

Strengths

The all-GigE architecture means every LUCID camera shares the same interface ecosystem, with standard Ethernet cabling, PoE power, no frame grabbers, and the same Arena SDK across the whole range. For a multi-camera system, that consistency is a real advantage.

LUCID's innovation pipeline on advanced sensing (SWIR, polarization, event-based, ToF 3D) consistently delivers technologies that larger manufacturers are slower to adopt. RDMA support on higher-speed models reduces CPU load for demanding multi-camera systems. The founding team built Point Grey, so the engineering depth belies the 2017 founding date.

Limitations

No CoaXPress option. If your application genuinely exceeds 25GigE bandwidth, you need Teledyne, CIS or Zebra. The line scan range is more limited in resolution than Teledyne's at the very top end, though LUCID is expanding its line scan portfolio, and its line scan cameras are currently the only ones on the market with an IP67 rating.

CIS Corporation

CIS is a Japanese camera manufacturer that has been building imaging products since 1978. They are less well-known in Europe than Teledyne or LUCID, but they occupy two distinct niches where the quality of their engineering is genuinely exceptional.

The range

CoaXPress industrial cameras: CIS manufactures high-resolution, high-speed CoaXPress cameras for demanding OEM applications. Resolutions extend well beyond what most manufacturers offer, with models reaching into the hundreds of megapixels. These are precision instruments designed for applications where resolution and speed requirements are at the absolute limit of what the technology can deliver.

Compact broadcast cameras (SDI): CIS produces a range of ultra-compact point-of-view cameras with SDI output in HD and 4K. Both global shutter and rolling shutter options are available, with and without integrated zoom lenses. What distinguishes these cameras is the colour output. CIS has developed its own image signal processor, Clairvu, which produces broadcast-quality colour reproduction that is visibly superior to standard machine vision cameras.

Strengths

Japanese manufacturing quality. CIS cameras are built to exceptional standards, and this shows in the consistency, reliability, and precision of the hardware. For OEM customers who need cameras that perform identically unit after unit across production volumes, this matters.

On the CoaXPress side, CIS serves the most demanding end of the market. When an OEM needs the highest resolution, the highest speed, or both, CIS is a serious option. Clearview has designed CIS CoaXPress cameras into several major OEM programmes where the resolution and speed requirements exceeded what other manufacturers could deliver.

On the broadcast side, the Clairvu ISP produces colour that is genuinely stunning. The colour science is noticeably better than standard machine vision cameras, which makes CIS the right choice for applications where colour accuracy and visual quality matter, so in industries like medical imaging, broadcast, scientific, and any application where the camera output will be viewed by a human eye rather than processed purely by software.

The broadcast range also serves a specific crossover need, for applications that require the sensor performance of an industrial camera (global shutter, precise triggering, high frame rates) combined with SDI output for direct display or recording. This is an uncommon combination, and CIS is one of the few manufacturers that offers it.

Limitations

CIS is a specialist manufacturer, not a broad-catalogue company. Their range is narrower than Teledyne or LUCID, and they do not cover the mainstream GigE area scan market in the way that Teledyne or LUCID do. If you need a standard 2 or 5 megapixel GigE area scan camera for a general-purpose inspection station, Teledyne or LUCID will have more options at lower price points. CIS cameras are positioned at the higher end of the market in pricing, reflecting the engineering quality and the specialist applications they serve.

Zebra

Zebra is best known for barcode and industrial scanning, but its machine vision range has grown into a credible camera portfolio backed by the Aurora software suite, frame grabbers, and vision controllers. For customers who want cameras, software, and control hardware validated together as a single tested system from one vendor, Zebra is increasingly compelling. The two ranges worth knowing are the CV60 (GigE) and the newer CV70 (CoaXPress).

CV60 GigE area scan

The CV60 is an area scan range built for multi-camera systems, for applications like high-speed scan tunnels. It is available in GigE Vision and USB3 Vision, spanning 2.3 to 24.5 megapixels across mono and colour models, with global shutter CMOS sensors, industrial shock and vibration ratings (80G/10G), and features such as region-of-interest, blemish compensation, shading correction and sequencer modes. The cameras are supported by Zebra’s wide range of Aurora software.

CV70 CoaXPress area scan

Launched in 2026, the CV70 is Zebra's high-speed CoaXPress camera. Built on CoaXPress 2.1, it delivers frame rates up to 290 fps across models from 5 to 25 megapixels, in what Zebra describes as the smallest dual-link CXP form factor on the market. It is aimed squarely at demanding, high-throughput inspection such as small-part inspection, EV battery assembly and semiconductor inspection, where high resolution and low latency both matter. It pairs well with Zebra's Rapixo CXP frame grabbers and the 4Sight vision controller.

AltiZ 3D profile sensors

Beyond area scan, Zebra also offers the AltiZ range of 3D laser profile sensors. The AltiZ uses a dual-camera, single-laser design that reduces the occlusion gaps common to single-camera profilers, generating profiles, depth maps or point clouds at profiling rates up to 11,000 per second. It uses a standard GigE Vision interface with PoE, and is housed in an IP67 aluminium body with M12 connectors for industrial environments. A higher-resolution AltiZ 4200 targets fine electronics and automotive inspection.

Photoneo 3D structured light

Zebra's 2025 acquisition of Photoneo brought a second, very different 3D technology into the range, alongside AltiZ laser triangulation. Photoneo's patented parallel structured light captures high-quality 3D data of moving objects, something conventional structured light cannot do because it normally needs a static scene. The flagship MotionCam-3D scans scenes in motion at 2MP resolution, while the PhoXi 3D Scanner delivers sub-millimetre accuracy on static scenes. A newer MotionCam-3D Color Blue uses a blue laser for better performance on shiny metals, plastics, and in bright or variable lighting. These sensors are aimed squarely at vision-guided robotics, bin picking, depalletizing, and dimensioning, and are certified to interface with the major robot manufacturers.

Rapixo frame grabbers

Zebra also manufactures its own frame grabbers, the Rapixo series, which is a real strength of the ecosystem and pairs naturally with the CV70 CoaXPress camera. The Rapixo CXP cards support CoaXPress 2.0 at CXP-6 and CXP-12 speeds, with one, two or four connections that can be used for independent cameras or aggregated for higher bandwidth, and Power-over-CoaXPress to simplify cabling. Pro models add FPGA-based image processing offload to take load off the host PC, and Data Forwarding models can relay image data to other computers for distributed processing. The wider range also supports Camera Link, so between the cameras, the frame grabbers, the controllers and the Aurora software, Zebra can supply and validate the entire acquisition path as one tested system.

Strengths

The biggest strength is the single-vendor ecosystem. Camera, frame grabber, controller, and software are designed, tested, and validated together, which reduces integration risk and simplifies support. For existing Zebra customers, the CV60 and CV70 slot into an environment they already know. The CV70 in particular is a genuinely capable high-speed CoaXPress camera in a very compact body, and the CV60 covers general-purpose GigE inspection with a wide resolution range and solid industrial ratings. All cameras are GeniCam-compliant.

Limitations

Zebra's camera range is narrower than Teledyne's. There is no line scan option and no advanced sensing cameras, such as polarization, SWIR, or UV. The area scan and 3D ranges are strongest when used within the Zebra ecosystem, so the appeal is greatest for customers who want a validated end-to-end Zebra system rather than those mixing components across multiple vendors.

If one manufacturer made the best camera for every application, we would only need one. They do not, and nobody ever will.

Teledyne gives us the broadest product portfolio in the industry, spanning area scan, line scan, 3D, board-level and frame grabbers, along with a supply chain that procures at scale and its own sensor manufacturing.

Zebra adds a tightly integrated, single-vendor option. For customers who want the camera, frame grabber, controller and software validated together as one tested system, the CV60 and CV70 are a strong fit.

Between the four, we can serve any industrial imaging application. More importantly, we can recommend the right camera for each project without being constrained by a single manufacturer's catalogue.
